Nursery School and Kindergarten Readiness leaf

How do I prepare my child for the "big" school? Well, you have already taken the first important step!

Working within a social context, children at Westboro Nursery School are exposed to a wealth of activities and resources designed to promote learning in all domains. Early literacy, pre-math and writing activities are available for the children to explore on a daily basis. Development occurs in predictable stages. For example, before a child can write he/she must have the fine motor skills necessary to use his/her wrist, hands and fingers effectively to hold a pencil. At nursery school we provide a wide range of activities to promote the acquisition of these skills including opportunities to paint, glue, stencil, use scissors, markers, chalk and manipulate play dough.

Our language rich environment encourages early literacy through the use of songs, stories and finger plays every day at circle time. Children are given the opportunity to comment, predict and problem solve. The written word is displayed on the children’s name tags, is used to label the learning centers of the room and posters on the wall. The children are given ample time and writing materials to experiment with.

The unit blocks, hollow blocks, and puzzle cupboard provide the children with an array of opportunities to use and manipulate materials to develop pre-math skills such as number recognition, fractions, sequencing and one to one correspondence.

Our low child to adult ratio ensures that children receive the support necessary to achieve success therefore building self-esteem and independence.

Our door is always open. If you would like to talk to us about school options for next year or discuss your child’s progress, please give us a call.
