Program Highlights
Introduction to French –
Our teachers offer a gradual introduction to French, in a fun and interactive way, through the use of songs, finger plays and action rhymes.
The children will be introduced to a variety of basic vocabulary along with monthly key words.
Our goal is to create an environment where the children become familiar and comfortable using and hearing French words in every day conversation.
Sign Language – Our language rich environment has included the use of sign language since 1994. Sign language is used throughout the program in a very natural and incidental way. The children are exposed to hundreds of signs from colours to snack foods, weather, emotions, family, animals and so much more. Along with the joy of learning a new language studies have shown that the use of sign language in the classroom increases attention span, vocabulary, literacy and self esteem.
Parents delight in their preschooler teaching the whole family new signs and making up some of their very own.
Music & Movement – Shannon Eddy Smith instructs group sing-alongs, music and movement through dance, percussion instrument play, and teaches basic theoretical concepts such as rhythm, tempo and music terminology. Musical dynamics are learned through 'active listening’, dance and instrument play. Through her songs children explore the various genres of music including classical, jazz, blues, pop and many more!
Outdoor Play – The children have the opportunity each day, weather permitting, to play outdoors at Westboro Kiwannis Park located outside of Dovercourt Recreation Centre. This a secure, fenced-in area for the children to play. Here children have fun on the play structure, building sand castles and tunnels and enjoy getting fresh air.
Parental Involvement – Westboro Nursery School is great because of you! The children love seeing their parent or caregiver in the classroom. It is also a great way for the parent/caregiver to see their child involved in the class and interacting with their peers. Parents are also required to volunteer outside the classroom. Full list of duties are included in the registration package.
However, it is not all work and no fun!! There is also a social component as well – coffee socials for the parents and caregivers at the beginning of the year, a Wine & Cheese Auction in November and a year end picnic in June.
Year End Picnic – This is an opportunity for families to get together to celebrate the school year at a local park. Westboro Nursery School appreciates and thrives on community involvement.
